    Reducer Frequently Asked Questions FAQ
    01
What is a Planetary Reducer (Gearbox)?

Planetary gearboxes and reducers are gear assemblies typically used in automation control systems to reduce the speed of the input power (usually from a motor) to achieve the desired output speed and torque.

They increase the motor output torque, i.e. increase the available work, while reducing the motor speed. The motor power is transferred through the motor shaft to the gear train (consisting of a pinion gear, a large gear and a housing) in the gear reducer, which in turn is output by the output shaft of the reducer. The ratio of the number of teeth of two gears meshed together is called the gear ratio. In this case, the ratio of the output speed to the input speed is called the reduction ratio.

    02
What are planetary gearboxes used for?

A planetary gearbox (servo gearhead or reducer) is a gear train between a motor and machinery used to transmit motor power, reduce motor speed and speed and increase output torque. Reduction gears are commonly used in a variety of mechanical power transmission applications that require high torque and low speed including laser cutting, food packaging, printing, robot floor tracks, large gantry equipment, AGVs, semiconductor manufacturing, and new energy equipment. Because gearboxes have the advantage of increasing motor output torque at a relatively low cost (compared to electric motors) it is possible to achieve the required output torque with a smaller motor size.

    03
What is a planetary gearbox? How does it work?

In industrial applications, there are many ways to reduce the speed of a motor, the most commmon of which is to add a gear set (gearbox). A reduction gear or gearbox reduces the speed of the motor while also increasing the output torque of the motor. The power from the motor is transferred through the motor shaft to a gear set (consisting of a pinion gear, a large gear, and a housing) in a gearbox, which is then output by the output shaft of the gearbox.

    04
    Why use planetary gearboxes?

Adopting reducer or gearbox to reduce the motor speed to increase the output torque is equivalent to increasing the working capacity of the motor. In addition, it is also possible to change the output direction by means of a reducer. The clockwise rotation of the motor’s output shaft can be changed to counterclockwise rotation by means of a reducer or the output direction can be turned to 90 degrees by means of a right-angle gearbox, thus saving installation space.

    05
What is a planetary gearbox? How does it work?

    Reducing Expenses

The purchase cost of the motor is relatively high compared to the reducer, the reducer increases the torque of the motor means that the output capacity of the motor is also increased, do not have to buy a high-power motor, only a smaller motor plus reducer can achieve the required output power. The cost of the overall configuration can also be greatly reduced.

    06
What are the types of speed reducers?

There are many types of reducers and gearboxes, according to the structure and transmission mode, the common ones are cylindrical gear reducer, worm gear reducer, planetary gearbox, cycloid gearbox and harmonic gearbox. Gearboxes have high output torque, high efficiency, a wide range of ratios, and a variety of gear set structures to choose from.
